Better Late Than Ever
Its a couple of days late. But here's this week's blog. This week we talk about the passing of Deadliest Catch's Captain Phil Harris and that certain very popular smart phone.
Thanks for being patient about getting a blog update from the weekend. Normally I am pretty dedicated to updating this page on Sundays. This week I had so much going on I could not get more than a bare minimum update done. Tonight my time is a little less constrained.
Deadliest Catch-Captain Phil
Ever had a television show or a movie blindside you emotionally? Thats what happened when I decided to watch the episode of Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch. I knew it was going to deal with the death of one of their stand out principal subjects; Captain Phil Harris. I knew it was going to be about the struggles of dealing with a stroke because in last week’s episode they fairly completely documents Phil’s oncoming stroke. And since my own father was the victim of a severe stroke, I knew watching the show was going to hit pretty close to home for me emotionally.
I just underestimated how close this show would be to my own experiences with my Dad through those very tough days where we thought we might lose him. Thankfully my Dad is still around and getting a little better day by day. But wow. Watching that show was an emotional land mine for me.
Lets talk about a certain popular smart phone.
I need to speak in vague terms because I work for the company that makes this very very popular smart phone.
This particular phone is getting some bad press because of a technical issue that might or might not drop calls.
My question is this: Is there any cell phone in the world that doesn’t drop calls once in a while? I’ve had phones on at least four different cell phone networks and I can tell you I’ve had spotty inconsistent reception with all of them. I had a cell phone that somehow managed to pull in a strong signal in the middle of a huge theater that had metal wall treatments, steel frame work surrounding everything, high voltage cabling everywhere and a myriad of electronic devices that denied every other phone in that space any kind of reception whatsoever. We used to joke about it being the nuclear phone. But that phone that could defy reception issues at work could not find a signal in my own home even when I could see an in-network cell phone tower from my bedroom window.
That being said, my new smart phone... the very one getting all the bad press for having an antenna issue... gets better reception than any previous phone I have ever had. That’s right. The phone that is getting criticized for dropping so many calls has never dropped a single call in a month of use.
PC Magazine recently compared this particular smart phone with its nearest competition; The newest Verizon Droid phone and guess what? In their tests my phone... the one deemed to be so problematic in the current media blitz... out performed the Verizon Droid phone in almost every category.
I’ve read three separate such articles where neutral publications compare these two top selling smart phones and again and again, my phone came out on top. This begs the question; if my phone is so terrible as some of the current press might want you to believe, why isn't there an outcry of outrage about the Droid, which test after test was out performed by this supposedly troubled other smart phone? Doesnt this indicate that the Droid performes worse? Yet where is the outrage about that?
So if this phone is so plagued with problems, how come my experience, and the experiences of so many others out there, have been so overwhelmingly positive?
