The Blog after the Super Bowl
The Super Bowl Ads, President Obama's Addressing the GOP, and more...
Welcome to another fun-filled week at Bogworld. I am thinking about changing the format of Bogworld again due to the advent of Apple’s new iPad device. Seems sort of like a no brainer. I think this sort of tablet device is the wave of the future and it really is going to be the perfect way to enjoy a cartoon page like Bogworld.
Its going to be like reading an electronic comic book. I want to be right on top of that when this new technology hits the public in a month or so.
So what’s on my mind this week?
The Super Bowl
Who won the Super Bowl this year? I’m pretty sure its not really going to be the Colts of the Saints. I’m guessing the real winning is going to be Madison Avenue. Television commercials seem to be what people talk about as much as, if not more than, the game itself. Hey, the last few Super Bowls have actually been pretty good games. And yet people seem just as interested in the ads.
America is a very weird place.
I thought the VW ad was the best ad. But I find it really weird that when I went to Hulu.com to see all the ads again, the commercials were all brought to Hulu by Coca Cola. Go Daddy needs to think of some other gimmick because the promise of seeing boobs is actually getting old. And you really really have to be annoyingly repetitive for boobs to become uninteresting.
I thought the half time show was the best part of the whole spectacle. Okay you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out CBS had something to do with bringing in The Who to be the half time act. The Who is responsible for 80% of the theme music for CBS’s shows (mainly because 80% of the shows on CBS are variations on CSI). That being said, I’m not even a big Who fan and I still really liked the show. I think its the first time in half time history where the act was actually in sync not only with their own music but also with the lights and the fireworks.
What? You want me to comment on the game too?
There was a game?
Why Can’t We All Just Get Along?
If you watched the President’s State of the Union Address last week and his appearance at a gathering of the GOP shortly after (you can find the link to that if you click back a blog or two on this page). You will see a common thread; Namely, Obama wants to bring back some level of civility into national politics.
This might be a more difficult task than passing health care reform.
The problem is, Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and George “the uniter” Bush Jr and his band of ideologues polarized politics so severely we might never see real bipartisanship again.
The right wingers have painted all Liberals to be gay ecological communist abortionists and the left wingers have countered by painting all Conservatives as war-mongering bible-thumping lock-stepped red necks.
The problem is, most of us live somewhere in the middle of all that nonsense. And the fact of the matter is no one has an absolute claim to the truth. Though I personally believe Progressives embrace facts far better than the Conservatives do.
I seems to drive hardline Liberals crazy that Obama is even bothering to hold out a semi-friendly hand to Conservatives. I know from reading some Conservative blogs that they see Obama’s openness to try to work together as some sort of socialist trap that will taint their re-election chances.
Like it or not. Sooner or later. If this country is going to survive, we need to get back to where we were before this political rift developed. Where Democrats and Republicans debated things honestly. Where there was some compromise in order to do what was ultimately the right thing to do for the welfare of the people.
The welfare of the people. Now that’s something that has been lost a bit on both sides. It seems the special interest groups representing health insurance companies and manufacturers and large financial institutions are really directing the path of our leaders these days. Not those of us who they are supposed to be representing.
In my opinion, its time to clean house. Any member of Congress known to be indebted to an outside company should be flushed out of the system. Heck maybe we need to have strict term limits so that there cannot be career politicians any more. That way our elected leaders can focus on getting work done for us and not be so wrapped up on what they need to do to get re-elected.
You’ve got to admit, it would solve a lot of problems.
