Emd of Jan, Beginning of Feb
Welcome to another week at Bogworld. I’m trying to keep the fresh cartoons coming. It was a pretty good week for updates. Hopefully I can do that again this week.
Lots on my mind so lets get started...
The State of the Union
I thought the state of the union address this past week was a perfect little snapshot of what’s right and what’s wrong with this country today. We have a really good President who’s hands are being tied by an absolutely ineffectual Congress.
It would be easy to blame it all on the “Just Say No” approach the Republicans have taken on literally everything since Obama took office. But the Democrats have the clear majority and still nothings really getting done. The so-called Super Majority that the Democrats just lost when Kennedy’s Senate seat was recently taken by a Republican is a myth. A “super majority” only comes into play when there is a filibuster to vote down. In just about any other case, a simple majority passes legislation. So whenever you hear your representatives talking about not having the super majority, that’s just a poor excuse for not getting something done.
We have a really strong President but without the support of an active Senate and House, his strong leadership is being wasted.
Obama took time to politely scold everyone in that hall--Including the Supreme Court Justices-- for not seeing beyond their own political careers and just doing what’s right for the common people they supposedly represent.
Democrats and Republicans. We are all suffering from a lack of real representation.
President Obama is correct to point back at the mess George W. Bush Jr. Left behind. No leader, Democrat or Republican, would be able to turn the fortunes of the entire country around in one year. But I think it is safe to say that the unpopular actions of bailing out the banks did keep us all from a deep depression. Things might not be perfect today. But they are a heckuva lot better than they might have been if Republicans remained in charge and continued on the same path they wanted to keep on.
America’s state is much more stable than it has been in a very long time. And from a stable foundation we can start building again.
Apple’s New iPad
Just like when the iPhone first came out, there were a certain amount of nay sayers who just did not get it. A few years later I dare say those same people cannot live without their iPhone.
The same sort of thing seems to be happening with Apple’s new device, the iPad. A certain number of people in the press don’t seem to be able to see beyond what comes in the box. It just looks like a big iPhone. Big deal. Who needs that?
The reason the iPhone became so successful and why I think the new iPad will also be a resounding success is in its chameleon like interface. That nice clean slab of glass with very few physical buttons is quite literally a clean slate. Its a device that becomes exactly what the user needs it to be because the interface can be anything. If you want it to be a book, its the best e-reader on the market. You need it to be a laptop for your business trip? There is a full productivity suite available for it. You need it to do a very specific task for a very specific purpose? Software can be developed quite easily to do exactly what you need it to do.
Thats the genius of the thing. It is precisely whatever you want it to be.
I cannot wait to get one.
