Transformers 2-Revenge of the Fallen
Yup. I saw it. And of course I saw it in IMAX. There is no doubt about it. Transformers 2 is going to be one of the biggest hits of the summer. It delivers precisely what Transformer fans are going to be expecting. Giant robots kicking ass. In fact of all the movies featuring giant robots kicking ass this summer, Transformers 2-Revenge of the Fallen is by far the best.
Transformers 2 shares the same excuse of content that makes or breaks the Jurassic Park movies. All Jurassic Park movies only have to deliver realistic looking dinosaurs chasing people and they will be a hit. Transformer movies really only have to deliver giant robots knocking crap over and crashing into things and thats it. Hit. And Transformers 2 delivers that in spades. More so than the original in fact.
The original Transformers movie showed up in IMAX theaters as a late summer afterthought. After being a bona-fide hit in regular theaters, it came out digitally remastered in the fall in IMAX theaters and doubled up on its success. With that in mind, Michael Bay actually shot some sequences for the sequel with IMAX cameras. The result is some really BIG jaw dropping scenes where you really feel the scale of these battling bots.
Folks who expressed some disappointment in Star Trek not having any full screen IMAX sequences are really going to be happy with Transformers 2. It takes a little while, but when the IMAX sequences come up it really does have an impact. It captures what IMAX has always done best; give viewers that “you are there” feeling. And having that “you are there” feeling in the middle of humongous fighting robots is pretty frakking cool.
No one is going to win an academy award for this flick... except maybe the special effects department... But its a pretty fun popcorn movie. It delivers precisely what it promises... Giant robots kicking ass.
The Power of Twitter
A few weeks back I spent some space in my blog criticizing Twittering. I joked about how it reminded me of stalking someone. I joked about how it seemed like a terrible waste of time. And then I challenged readers to change my mind. To show me a productive use of Twitter so I could see what so many other people seem to see in it.
Be careful what you ask on the internet...
The thousands and thousands of protestors in Iran showed me just how wrong I was about Twitter. Or perhaps more to the point, how Twitter COULD be used.
I hope lots of you Twitter users who have been wasting time following tweets from Ashton Kucher or complaining about fast food service or television shows feel a little embarrassed. You’ve had a powerful networking tool at your fingertips and really did nothing socially significant with it.
The young people in Iran found a way to use Twitter to organize thousands and thousands of people to peacefully protest their recent election. People who perhaps have been feeling oppressed for many years finally found a clever way to band together in a way that could not be suppressed by their government or religious leaders. They discovered Twitter gave them voices they normally would never have had. They found thousands and thousands of other Iranians who felt the same oppression and through this silly networking tool found their first real taste of free speech.
Way to go, Twitter.
