What is the recipe for a really great movie? Almost every time I leave a movie created by the folks at Pixar Animation Studios I find myself pondering this. What is the recipe to a really great movie and why is it Pixar seems to be cooking with this recipe better than just about anyone else out there!
It takes years to make an animated movie. Even a computer animated one. And maybe its because Pixar can only physically produce these gems once every couple of years, we all find ourselves tolerating just mediocre movies and celebrating merely good movies... Then a Finding Nemo or Incredibles is served up like a long awaited perfectly prepared holiday feast.
UP! might be Pixar’s best yet.
UP! reminded me what makes a truly great movie. Its when a movie takes you on a complete emotional journey. UP! manages to play on every emotion. Its one of the funniest movies I have seen in years while still having moments that brought me to the verge of tears. There’s the illusive recipe! Think about it. All the really great timeless classic movies out there manage to span the entire range of emotions. I really think UP! is going to be counted as one of those rare movies.
I loved this movie so much I do not want to give a moment away in this review. Just go see it and experience it fresh. I happened to see it in 3D which did add a little something to the magic. But this movie is driven by its heart. Not its spectacle. Though it is a really spectacular looking movie. While I watched it I kept thinking, this film is the charming thing I have seen on the big screen in decades. And then, somehow, it managed to get even better.
