Terminator-Salvation- The Review
Is this a good summer movie? Sure it is. Is it better than Star Trek? Nope. That’s sort of how I felt leaving the movie tonight. Star Trek just sort of set the bar pretty high for those of us who love summer popcorn munching movies. If this summer did not jump out of the gates with Trek, I might be really excited about Terminator-Salvation.

Don't get me wrong. TS is a pretty good popcorn movie. Just not a great one. All the elements are there. Killer robots and lots and lots and lots of things blowing up. The story is yet another chapter in the John Connor family history. This time John is all grown up and fighting the war against Skynet and all its Terminators. The thing that sort of got in the way of full enjoyment for me were some of the gaping holes in the plot.

I dont want to give too much away here but I dont think I was the only person in the crowded theater wondering why these very sophisticated machines did not seem to be monitoring the radios. John Connor seems to host a nightly radio talk show and every important secret detail of every military mission about to be waged against the machines is broadcast over walkie talkies and shortwave radios. In fact, central to the plot is how the robots themselves use radio signals to communicate. Yet, for reasons they don’t really explain, the killer robots cannot seem to tune into the human's radio.

Sure there are other problems with logic and physics, but more than anything else the movie seems held back by a bland script and flat performances. With all the special effects this could be a really great summer movie. But somehow it manages only to be slightly better than middle of the road. I mean the formula is there for a really great movie. But for me I just never felt in the moment. I kept thinking that’s a cool stunt. Or thats a cool special effect. But never got caught up in the story.

And there lies the problem. This movie has all the right factors but somehow fails to be engaging for the audience.

If you have seen Star Trek a dozen times already, Terminator-Salvation should keep you happy until Transformers comes out.
