The Bog Blog
Hi and welcome to another fun week in Bogworld.
Happy belated Mothers Day. Even though the Bogworld strip is loosely autobiographical I tend to leave my family out of the mix. We’re northern Minnesotans who don’t like a lot of attention drawn to ourselves, but I will take a moment to talk about Mom here today.
My Mom is an amazing woman. Let me give you an example. On the night my Dad had his stroke Mom insisted on driving home from the hospital because she told us, “I’m going to have to drive every day now, I better get used to it.” And ever since that day she has only missed visiting Dad in the nursing home due to impossible weather conditions. Through her strength and stubbornness she has shown us all the real meaning of love and commitment. She is an amazing woman.
I was not able to be there for her on Mother’s Day but I will be there in a week to make up for it. Love you Mom.
Ok, onto other business...
Here in Minnesota, Mothers Day also means its opening weekend of the Minnesota Fishing Season. This has always been kind of a sore spot with Minnesota Moms. In fact this year, because of the lack of winter we had it was suggested that the fishing opener could come a little early so that it would not conflict with Mother’s Day. People were actually excited about this. Moms would get their day and fishing enthusiasts (most Minnesotans) could have a relatively guilt-free kick off to the fishing season. But then our department of natural resources noticed that the lack of snow this winter would keep water levels on our lakes low and they decided to put the fishing opening back to Mothers Day weekend in hopes that we would have some heavy rains this spring to bring those water levels back up. So, long story short, if you were a Minnesota Mom there is a good chance Minnesota Dad was absent for at least part of Mother’s Day.
Now its not my intent to go all political here at Bogworld again. But this strip is a very topical one that kind of relies on whatever everyone is talking about as fodder for the toons. And sometimes its hard not to step back into the political side of things during an election year. And when something really obviously cartoon worth comes to my attention, its a good bet it will get captured in the cartoon.
Dark Shadow- The Movie Review.
It should be noted that I am not one of those guys who loves everything Tim Burton and Johnny Depp partner up to produce. I like some of their collaborations quite a lot. Others strike me as just more of the same weird for the sake of being weird stuff.
Dark Shadows falls somewhere in the middle of those things. Its not going to be remembered as the best of their works. But it is entertaining. It is, after all, the big screen treatment of a very odd television show. Dark Shadows was a very low budget soap opera with the strange twist of its characters all being drawn from classic horror. So it should be no surprise that the movie version is itself a very dressed up soap opera episode. Everything is played out with that campy sort of scripting and performances.
I think Tim Burton fans will love this stuff. I personally find it a little stiff and though it looks great. It is slow to deliver.

Come on in to read all about one of the most fun movies to come along in a long time. No spoilers! I promise!
This week I talk about the Avengers and Chimps and oddly enough why comic book characters and monkeys are better than Republicans.
Hi and welcome to another fun filled week at Bogworld.
I am debating with myself (something I actually do a lot of) over whether or not I have spent enough time working the Disney theme in the Bogworld strip. Is it weird that I am sort of getting jealous that Zac and Bog have been there longer than my recent week long trip to Disney? The Disney themed cartoons have been going on since the 12th of March. Thats more than a month. Dammit I want to be at Disney for a month! So I might be bringing Zac and Bog home this week. If you are a fan of this line of toons, no worries. I am already planning to go back to Disney myself in February 2013 and maybe a trip to Disneyland before that and since this cartoon is a loose reflection of my own life there is every reason to believe the Bogworld characters will be back to the Magic Kingdom again... and again...
Its been really hard trying to stay neutral about the upcoming elections. So this week I will speak up a little...
Remember years back when the Republicans loved to paint the Democratic candidates as “flip floppers” for being on record supporting one thing and then coming out against it later on? I would like to point at most of the Republicans right now, point, and declare them all FLIP FLOPPERS!
You dont have to go back very far at all... last week really... to hear all the Republicans who had serious misgivings about Mitt Romney. It seemed everyone but the people from the Romney campaign themselves had something negative to say about Mitt. He invented Romneycare that turned into Obamacare. He’s not a traditional Christian. His history is more liberal than conservative. He was pro-choice before he was pro-life. His business history is more like a robber baron than a supporter of real business building. He cannot be trusted because he says whatever he needs to say to get elected.
And for the most part, many of those complaints are accurate.
But as soon as Rick Santorum bowed out of the race, all these people who had so many bad things to say about Romney are now saying he’s exactly what the party needs.
FLIP FLOPPERS!!
Its Earth Day.
Seriously, shouldn’t EVERY day be Earth Day? The Earth is not like some other holiday where we all need to be reminded how important our girlfriends, wives and significant others are. We should all be celebrating and protecting the Earth every day of our lives!
One thing you can do is go see the new Disney Nature movie Chimpanzee. If you go the first week of the run (Now Showing so rush to your theater now!) Disney will donate a significant part of the ticket sales to programs to protect the wild Chimpanzees in Africa.
Its Earth Day. Plant something.

Welcome to another week at Bogworld. Hope you are enjoying the reliving of my recent vacation at Walt Disney World through Bogworld. I’m having fun taking some time to take Bog on an imaginary introduction to the Magic Kingdom.
Today marks the 100th year anniversary of the sinking of Titanic. I remember my late grandmother telling me how shocked she was as a child to hear the news on the radio that the unsinkable ship actually did sink. Its an interesting reminder of how far we have come as people in a mere century. Think about it. 100 years ago. And yet just a few months ago another giant ocean liner disaster occurred. The more things change the more things stay the same.
Still think that global climate change is just a Democratic tree hugger conspiracy? We are seeing some of the earliest bouts of tornado outbreaks in history. And to give you an idea how messed up things are here, It was 78 degrees here in the Twin Cities with thunderstorms and tornados passing just to the north and west of us tonight. Tomorrow just up the road in Duluth Minnesota they are predicting the possibility of a full blown snow storm. Possibly five inches of snow.
With that in mind, please give this a read...

Wrath of the Titans. A review.
You know how you secretly love the Transformer movies for the crazy robot on robot fighting and the epic mass destruction but can’t admit it because of Shia LaBeouf’s moronic acting and Michael Bay’s moronic writing.
Well. friend, do I have a movie for you!...
Wrath of the Titans has a couple of Academy Award actors... and Sam Worthington from Avatar. It is based on stories that have been told and retold for thousands of years (something I dare say will not happen to Michael Bay’s Transformer scripts). And yet it still has the rocking over-the-top epic scale action that is actually on a bigger scale than that other movie which I regret even mentioning in this review. Wrath of the Titans doesn’t waste time with robots that disguise themselves as the entire 2010 Chevy car line. Wrath has Gods fighting each other! Now THAT’S a real battle royale, baby!
Without getting into too much detail (because there really aren’t a lot of details to this story), There once was a dysfunctional family of Greek Gods. Two of them battled it out in the first movie: Clash of the Titans. Well this time they reluctantly have to call a family truce in order to team up and combat a calamity that might ruin their world and the human world. Thats really all you need to know. Most of the movie is just non stop action. Humans versus monsters. Monsters vs demigods. Gods versus other gods. Its like All Star Wrestling and WMMA meets greek mythology. And that’s kind of awesome.
I really did not think I would like this movie. The first one, Clash of the Titans, felt a little hollow and maybe a little slapped together. It wasn’t terrible. But it was not great either. So I understand people’s uneasiness about giving this series a second look. But Wrath kind of rocks! Turns out this time around the film maker actually shot the movie with 3D treatment in mind and the post production work toying with the audience’s perception of scale works wonderfully. There are plenty of ground level shots where you in the audience feel just about as threatened to be stepped on by a giant Cyclops as the characters on the screen. And the side trip through Labyrinth is really pretty cool.
I have to admit it. I liked this movie. Oh but I will never admit I liked anything about the Transformers movies.

Here is my review of the wildly successful Hunger Games. Does it deserve the success its having in its opening weekend?
